Green Bay Packers running back Cedric Benson (32) is carted off the field after getting injured during the Oct. 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Packers said Thursday that Benson is out for the season because of the injury.

The Packers will be finishing their season with James Starks and Alex Green as their primary running backs after all.

The Packers were hoping Cedric Benson could recover late this season from a Lisfranc injury sustained Oct. 7 at Indianapolis, and return as their main halfback for the stretch run. Coach Mike McCarthy, though, said today that Benson underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the Lisfranc injury in his foot and will miss the rest the of the season.

Starks recently has surpassed Green as the starter. Green has played mainly on passing downs, sharing those duties with fullback John Kuhn.

“Cedric I felt was playing very well each and every week as we moved forward,” coach MIke McCarthy said. “With that (injury), we’ve been rotating Alex Green, James Starks and now having John Kuhn back, I feel we have a good rotation. It’s just really finding the things they all do well and play to that and have that in sync with the run-blocking unit. I thought the way we started last game and I thought Arizona (on Nov. 4) was a good game. If we can just kind of find that rhythm, that definitely would benefit us.”

The Packers had placed Benson on the new injured reserve/designated for return and now will simply leave him on IR for the rest of the season. Benson had a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum of $825,000, though he also had an injury salary split. Since he’s been on injured reserve he's been making a weekly prorated portion of $393,000.
