In business, many trends come and go. But one constant that will never change is the need to earn the trust of your customers. For pork producers, and all businesses involved in the food chain, earning and maintaining the trust of our customers - retail, foodservice and the consuming public - has never been more challenging. This fact, combined with our industry's desire to conduct our operations according to high ethical standards and best practices, led the National Pork Board to evolve the Pork Quality Assurance program.

Launched in 2007, Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus) is a continuous improvement program that outlines Good Production Practices (GPPs) in the areas of food safety and animal well-being. It delivers the latest in scientific research and improved production practices to producers and production employees.

UW-Extension Fond du Lac County will be hosting a PQA PlusŪ Certification on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the UW-Extension Fond du Lac County Office to give individuals an opportunity to become certified through an educational program. Certified PQA Plus trainer Zen Miller will be conducting the certification program and will cover topics:

? Ten Good Production Practices

? Record Keeping (including daily observation, drug use and storage, feed records, etc.)

? Euthanasia protocols

? Emergency planning and training

PQA Plus Certification is an opportunity to participate in this certification program as the swine industry demonstrates responsible practices to build trust and maintain the integrity of the pork industry. There is no fee for the program and is brought to you in partnership with Wisconsin Pork Association and UW-Extension. For more information, or to register for this certification program, please contact UW-Extension Fond du Lac County Dairy & Livestock Agent Tina Kohlman at 920-929-3171; or at tina.kohlman@ces.uwex.edu.

Please register by Tuesday, Dec. 11.
