Packers chasing 49ers for first-round playoff bye

Dec. 4, 2012

The Packers (8-4) have pulled within a half-game of the 49ers (8-3-1) for the No. 2 seed in the NFC, which would guarantee them a first-round playoff bye and divisional round post-season game at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are locked in a tie for first place with the Bears in the NFC North, but Green Bay owns the tiebreaker edge on the basis of its victory over Chicago in Week 2. The Packers and Bears meet at Soldier Field on Dec. 16 in a rematch that could determine the division title.

If Green Bay or Chicago wins its final four games, either team would need the 49ers to lose at least once in order to gain the No. 2 seed.

Meanwhile, four teams at 6-6 are chasing Seattle (7-5) for a wild-card playoff berth.
