It was a typical December day on Monday in one respect: A weather front created near whiteout conditions that were dangerous for travelers. Except this low visibility was caused by fog, not a snowstorm.

But the situation was no less treacherous than icy pavement.

One of the deadliest multi-vehicle crashes in Wisconsin's history was caused by fog, not ice, said Jeff Last, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The wreck occurred Oct. 11, 2002, on Interstate 43 in Sheboygan County and killed 11 people, injured 39 and involved 50 vehicles. ...
