Wednesday practice report: Grant goes, but no Nelson or Matthews

Dec. 5, 2012

Ryan Grant practiced for the first time with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday only hours after trying out and re-signing with the team following a season-threatening knee injury to running back James Starks.

Grant, who turns 30 on Sunday, took the roster spot vacated by running back Johnny White, who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson, outside linebacker Clay Matthews, running back James Starks, and defensive linemen C.J. Wilson and Mike Neal were absent from the portion of practice open to the media.

Defensive backs Charles Woodson (collarbone) and Sam Shields (ankle) returned to practice in a limited capacity. The two practice-squad players the Packers signed Wednesday, safety Chaz Powell and offensive lineman Shea Allard, were also participating.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy will be speaking to the media at approximately 1 p.m.
