Cross country skiing is for everyone looking to maintain fitness during the winter months. It offers great total body exercise, as skiers use both arms and legs for forward propulsion. Cross country skiing is easily adjusted to each personís level of fitness. Plus, it provides a chance for fresh air and sunshine during your workout.

1. Make sure poles fit under armpits, boots are comfortable and skis are the right length for your build. Gear should be sized correctly by a professional.

2. Test equipment in advance to be comfortable with getting skis on and off.

3. Stay on marked trails. Have a map or know the area before venturing out alone.

4. Dress in lightweight layers, wear hat and gloves. Consider a small lumbar pack for water or snacks.

5. Go at your own pace.

6. To go uphill, put skis in a V position, walk and lean forward. To go down a slope, use the snowplow technique to slow down momentum or descend slowly with skis pointed together like a pizza wedge.

7. Consider a lesson with an experienced skier.
