♦Volunteers from the Wausau Urban Community Gardens donated more than 287 pounds of fresh produce from the Second Street Community Garden, East Towne Community Garden and First American Community Garden to local food pantries during the 2012 growing season.

♦The Marathon County Hunger Coalition Share the Harvest initiative at the farmers market this summer provided more than 1,430 pounds of fresh produce and more than $145 to be used at various community food pantries.

♦The Wausau Farmers Market had $4,720 worth of EBT, electronic benefit program, sales from FoodShare beneficiaries during the 2012 season.

♦On June 19, the Marathon County Board passed a resolution calling for Marathon County to become the healthiest county in Wisconsin.

♦Marathon County Health Department received $460,000 to work on expanding voluntary smoke free environments to include apartment buildings, strengthen farm-to-school programs so students have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and increasing physical activity for kids by promoting and implementing open gyms between schools and community agencies

♦The county participated in two National Drug Take Back Days, turning in more than 1 ton of commonly abused prescriptions in the home. The drugs were collected at Marathon County’s five permanent drop box sites.

♦More than 20 local businesses and civic organizations received Law Enforcement Alcohol Server Training from officers and public health educators to ensure that all servers and sellers of alcohol are trained servers.

♦During compliance checks, more than 9 out of 10 retailers refused sale of tobacco products to youths.
