Lola Smiley, a resident of the Portage County Health Care Center, celebrated her 100th birthday recently with a family gathering at her son's home in Stevens Point.

Joe and Carol Smiley hosted the gathering, which also included her daughter, Susan Merlo, who came from Elne, France. Also in attendance were grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in La Crosse, Lola and her late husband, Joe, owned and operated Smiley's Hallmark on Main Street in Stevens Point for 10 years in the 1970s. She also worked as a secretary for many years in La Crosse, Madison and during World War II at Badger Ordinance Works in Baraboo and Williams Field in Chandler, Ariz.

She and Joe were married in Tempe, Ariz., in 1945, and celebrated 50 years of marriage before his death in 1995.

She enjoys playing cards and also used to bake cookies with her children and grandchildren.
