A preliminary federal investigation has found at least 96 percent of Brown County’s 340 unsupervised registered sex offenders live where they are listed.

The compliance check on all the county’s registered sex offenders, named Operation TRUTH, began several days ago and was conducted by Deputy U.S. Marshals, Green Bay police, Brown County Sheriff’s deputies and Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry specialists, according to a statement released Monday.

Brown County has 340 registered sex offenders who are not under active probation or parole supervision. Of them, 12 may not be living where they told the registry they did, the statement said.

The operation will continue in the coming weeks with follow-up investigations on the possible registered sex offenders who are non-compliant. Offenders found to be living somewhere they are not registered may be charged with failure to maintain or update their registration.

Any sex offenders who may have relocated to other states could face federal prosecution.

In 2006, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was signed into law to make it a federal crime for an offender to move from one state to another in order to avoid registration requirements.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the operation seeks to protect all citizens of Brown County, especially children.
