Green Bay police say there has been a recent rise in burglaries and thefts from vehicles on the city's west side.

Suspects are believed to prowl at night checking car and garage doors.

Incidents have been reported in neighborhoods near Mather Heights and Perkins parks. Those areas include the blocks of 1200 Thrush Street, 1000 Marshall Avenue, 700 Wilson Avenue, 800-1000 North Locust Street, 400 Fairview Court and 1400 Dousman Street. Three incidents were reported in the 1100 block of Marshall Avenue and five were reported in the 1200 block of Shawano Avenue.

Police advise residents to leave outdoor lights on, provide motion-detector lights around your outside doors, install solid core doors and heavy-duty locks.

Residents should also use a secondary blocking device on patio doors, make sure all windows are secured, and remember to close and lock the garage door at night and check doors before sleeping. Police caution not to leave valuables in a vehicle or visible through a garage window.

Neighbors should also watch out for one another and if you are going away on a trip, have someone check your home, retrieve mail and clean up so criminals can't easily tell you are away, police said.

Alert police if you see any suspicious behavior.
