The city of Merrill will give nearly $4,000 to the Merrill Social & Sick Society to repair damage their building at 418 Grand Ave. sustained when the city demolished the adjoining building.

The city demolished the building at 416 Grand Ave. this fall after condemning it. The two buildings were attached by connecting floor joists; when the building was removed, holes were left in the east exterior wall of the Social & Sick Society's building, according to a development agreement the City Council passed Tuesday.

The Social & Sick Society is a charitable organization that began in 1912 as a group that would provide health benefits to members who were unable to work due to illness. It now provides scholarships and donations to community foundations.

The city will reimburse Social & Sick $3,996 toward the cost of repairing and winterizing the building and removing the remnants of the demolished building.
