Keep same-day voter registration

Gov. Scott Walker "unveiled" his legislative agenda in California, announcing that same-day voting registration causes "real problems because ? poll workers who are wonderful volunteers, who work 13-hour days and who in most cases are retirees [find it] ? difficult to handle the volume of people who come at the last minute." Eliminating same-day registration, however, as some Republicans proposed, is not the answer.

Same-day registration is one of the critical reasons why Wisconsin ranks sixth in voter turnout (70 percent in the last election).

As a poll observer for past elections, same-day registration was not a problem and more importantly ensured that registered voters were not unreasonably disenfranchised. In each election, at different polling places, a married couple who had voted regularly in the same place for many years found one spouse was registered and the other was not. Fortunately, they could reregister and vote.

Thus, eliminating same-day registration would place another requirement on every registered voter, namely: during open registration you would have to check to ensure you are still registered. Keep same-day registration.
