Packers not bringing in consultant for Crosby

Dec. 20, 2012

Shawn Slocum, the Packers’ special-teams coach, said the team is not bringing in a sports psychologist or kicking specialist to work with struggling Mason Crosby.

Crosby has missed at least one kick in each of the last nine games he’s attempted a field goal, including going 0-for-2 last week at Chicago, and for the season is 17-for-29 (58.6 percent).

Slocum said he works with Crosby on some mental parts of kicking, and that Crosby has mentors in the kicking business he consults also. But the Packers have decided against bringing in a sports psychologist.

“I get calls, emails, contact, from every guru there ever was about kicking,” Slocum said. “Guys that want to come try out. I get all that. We make a decision as an organization to do what we do through conversation, starting with (general manager) Ted (Thompson) and (coach) Mike (McCarthy) and myself, and everyone involved, and make decisions based on objective thoughts. We are where we are based on those decisions. We’re going the direction we decided to go.”

As he has for the past several weeks, Slocum said Crosby has kicked the ball well in practice this week.

“Mason has had, including this week, three really good weeks of practice,” Slocum said. “I thought last week was outstanding. We’re still not finished with this week. To sum up everything that’s going on, he needs to take his practice preparation and put that on the field. If he’ll do that, then he’s going to make field goals. We’ve done all the assessment, evaluation, discussion, technique adjustments. He needs to go make some field goals and get back on a roll.”
