Don't condemn large farms because they're big

As a dairy veterinarian, I read with interest "A Different Way of Doing Things" on Nov. 25. Unfortunately, it should have been an opinion piece. Large dairies aren't "factories" because cows don't have names. I was alarmed you published a list of dairies and their locations that included some of my favorite clients. Most of my clients milk less than 200 cows, ranging from one to a few thousand. At larger farms, employees are more specialized. I don't assist cows calving at larger farms often because they have maternity employees that help cows calve everyday and are good at what they do. Currently, two clients on your list are building new barns.

By labeling them factories, your "expert" admits her bias. She has no idea what she is talking about. The DNR is heavily involved in the construction of these barns. Small and large farms are not black and white. Please don't condemn large farms and publish negative opinionated pieces on the front page.

The uneducated can't tell the difference between fact and fiction. Large farms are full of hard-working people that have the cow's interest in mind just as much as small farms do.

The public deserves to know that.
