Spencer Spotlight column: Community provides 'presents' to residents

Santa is not the only one who comes bearing gifts.

The jolly old fellow makes his way around the world in the dark of night, guided by his reindeer. You know it is that special time of year, as everything is decorated, and the Christmas tree stands quiet as numerous presents surround it with warmth.

Around here, we have another gift giver, and the gifts keep coming year-round. These gifts don't just come from one person. They come from the whole community of Spencer. You might ask, what does a village give away every year?

Well, we provide a few special breakfasts. In June, there is the Chamber of Commerce Dairy Breakfast. In the fall, people flock to a local farm to enjoy breakfast provided by the Spencer FFA Alumni.

The Spencer Lions have been providing a breakfast on the morning of the Spencer Swamp Stompers Summer Antique and swap show. Local churches also hold various meals of different varieties. You might find a soup supper or even a pancake breakfast if you keep your eyes and ears open.

Don't throw away that flier that looks like nothing of importance. You just tossed away an invitation to enjoy some fine food. For an hour, on the fourth Tuesday of each month, you can enjoy a delicious meal while you enjoy the company of others.

Entertainment is by no means left behind. During August, young and old alike can meander down to the village park to enjoy the Music in the Park series, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. This past summer, people could enjoy a variety of music at the local ice cream establishment. For kids, and some adults, the Spencer Library held its summer reading program. They always put a good program together.

The Spencer Swamp Stompers hold two swap meets, one in the summer and one in the winter. The summer one is held in the park, and the winter one is at the clubhouse in the industrial park. During the summer event, you can enjoy the shiny, antique cars, trucks and cycles. In late summer, they added tractors.

Two major events pull in people from all around. They both provide the opportunity for former Rocket athletes to show their stuff. In the summer, there is the Brad Bauer Memorial Softball Tournament. People look to this weekend as the marquee summer event in Spencer. As the calendar turns its page to January, all eyes are on the school. Here, the Spencer Youth Recreation Club sponsors the alumni basketball and volleyball tournaments.

Our community also provides a fantastic, well-attended craft show sponsored by the Spencer PTA. Families, home for Thanksgiving always look forward to it. In December, there is a Lunch with Santa event that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Yes, the community of Spencer does play the role of Santa very well. We have all been good boys and girls, and for that, we get to enjoy all of these events. If I missed any events, my apologies go out to those groups who sponsor them.
