Vehicles with license plates from across the Midwest began to flood local ice rinks Dec. 27, bringing heated hockey competition to the ice and tourism dollars to local businesses.
Scott Legal, Everest Youth Hockey coach, said the fourth annual Midwest Freeze hockey invite shakes up teams' regular game schedules and exposes them to new competition. Most teams in the Wausau area play other teams within two hours of each other, he said.
