Post-practice McCarthy: Williams sits out with illness

Jan. 3, 2013

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media following practice on Thursday. Here are some highlights from his news conference:

-Wide receiver Jarrett Boykin (ankle) and cornerback Tramon Williams (illness) did not participate, along with defensive lineman Jerel Worthy (knee) who’s still on the roster, but already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

-Jermichael Finley, Alex Green, Davon House and JOrdy Nelson were all full participants. James Starks was limited with his knee injury.

-McCarty didn’t have feel for Tramon Williams illness. He had flu symptoms, was given medication.

-Cobb and Nelson looked good today. We'll see how they look tomorrow. The concern with Nelson is what injury could turn into (potentially swelling).

-Not surprised with how Christian Ponder played on Sunday. Did good things running the football and other things off the run.

-So much more involved than one guy and how he plays (on Ponder). The x factor will be line play on both sides.

-Feel good about where we are as a fotoabll team. Turf game is a little tougher on bodies.

-Friday is a Saturday for the team. They’ll report to hotel. Have night schedule they’ll follow with Saturday morning meetings.

-Playoff games are different. Rodgers has played in seven now. Will count on experience. He’s played in cold weather. Our QB has to play well, but football is still football. We have to play well in all 3 phases.

-We talk about deferring every week. Vikings have deferred majority of time. Will talk about getting off to fast start.

-Once guys get going, adrenaline pumping, still about playing football (and not worrying about cold).

-You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable, that's key to playing in cold. Vikings live in cold, so it won't be shock to them.

-Woodson has been practicing for 4 weeks. He will just have transition to game experience. We're going to let Woodson play. (Likely no restrictions).

-You want your team healthy. We're getting healthy at right time. You want to play your best football this time of year.

-Seamless transition from Saturday to Dietrich Smith. Pleased with way EDS has played.
