LETTER: Teachers must have protection skills

Teachers must have protection skills

During the 47 wonder-filled years of our marriage, my wife and I have had similar opinions and not-so-similar-opinions.

A wise husband learns that charismatic soulmates are next-to-never wrong. A man must understand that when God built his "second computer," Eve, he used a big bunch of the same parts of the first computer, Adam.

Our success at melding similar and not-so-similar opinions is helped by seeking actions that are practical, financially attainable and have Biblical, scientifically proven foundations.

The recent school shooting has led us to speak out with hopes that some easily obtainable, politically acceptable courses of actions be considered by all sides. It will be a long haul.

Most working teachers are required to participate in their own continuing self-education to keep their jobs. Since the first concern of a teacher is to protect those in their charge, let's require teachers to be trained in basic police duties. Spotting children in trouble and troubled children must be coupled with learned protection skills.

Let's make basic police skills a required course in earning the right to teach in any public school.

No more new or uselessly complicated gun-restriction laws. Instead, resurrect and utilize the government's already existing Department of Civilian Marksmanship to teach. The right to bear arms is as needed as the right to drive and own a car.
