As we start the second installment of Joe Heller’s awesome League of Lambeau illustration series, I thought I’d share how the reader voting went.
Remember, Press-Gazette Media editors chose four former and four current players for the series and asked readers to vote on a fifth for both groups. The former players – Bart Starr, Vince Lombardi, Don Hutson, Ray Nitschke and Brett Favre (voted in) – ran last week. This week, the lineup is Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews, Mike McCarthy and the voters’ choice.
More than 200 readers participated and both votes went down to the wire.
Among the former players, Favre held off a late charge by Reggie White, winning with 43 votes to White’s 34. The next-three-highest vote-getters were from the Lombardi era: Jerry Kramer with 14, Paul Hornung with 13 and Willie Davis with 12. The only other former player (in this case, player/coach) to receive double-digit votes was Earl “Curly” Lambeau with 10.
In all, 53 former players received at least one vote.
Some of the more obscure vote-getters (in my opinion) included Keith Woodside, an on-and-off starting running back during the Lindy Infante years; Jim Carter, whose claim to fame was being the unpopular replacement at middle linebacker for the legendary Nitschke; Samkon Gado, a rare bright light in the team’s woeful 2005 season; Rich Wingo, an early-1980s linebacker whose finest attribute was his surname; and Bo Molenda, yes, Bo Molenda. He was the starting fullback on the franchise’s first NFL championship team and scored a touchdown in the clinching 20-6 victory over the New York Giants in 1929.
Later in the week, we’ll break down the voting for current players.
Here’s the complete voting list for the former players:
