Saturday said he didn't ask to be taken out

Jan. 8, 2013

Those who watched the NBC broadcast of Saturday’s night Packers-Vikings wild-card playoff game heard commentator Cris Collinsworth discuss how veteran Jeff Saturday lost his starting job late in the season.

Collinsworth made it sound like the 37-year-old Saturday went to the coaches and told them he didn’t have what it took to play anymore, but Saturday said that’s not the way it happened.

“No, it’s not, and to be honest with you, I just want to let it die because it doesn’t make any difference,” Saturday said. “It is what it is now. We don’t need any distractions in the playoffs.”

The Packers benched Saturday two days before the Dec. 23 game against Tennessee in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith, who has performed well since taking over. Saturday had been battling multiple injuries, but both he and coach Mike McCarthy said the move was not injury related.

Saturday, who was signed by the Packers this offseason and started the first 14 games, said he was aware of Collinsworth's comments but didn’t know where Collinsworth got his information.

“I had a bunch of people text me about it,” Saturday said.
