FCS begins group for teens with addictions
Family Counseling Services will begin a group for teens with alcohol and drug issues from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 903 N. Second St., Wausau.
New Choices Group will use an evidenced-based program encouraged by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. This group is designed to reach youths with moderate to intense" needs and will be open so that teens can get into the group after it starts. The group consists of assessment, four weeks of education and 15 weeks of recovery.
The group will be led by one female dual-certified therapist and one AODA counselor. To make a referral or for more information, call Andy Benedetto at Family Counseling Services, 715-842-3346.
Car seat checks continue at Yach's
Safe Kids Wausau Coalition free car seat checks will continue as usual from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at Yach's Body and Custom in Wausau, while the regular checks at Aspirus Wausau Hospital are suspended until April during construction.
Families who would like to set up a one-on-one appointment at the hospital can call Michelle Armstrong at 715-847-2864 or the Aspirus Children's Safety Center at 715-847-2206.
Participants are asked to bring their children along when having their car seats checked.

Garden Visions opens registrations
Garden Visions 2013 will be Jan. 25 to 26 at the University of Wisconsin Marathon County.
Saturday's keynote speaker will be Tracy DiSabato-Aust, who will speak on The Well-Designed Mixed Garden: Building Borders With Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals & Bulbs. Eight different workshops will be offered Friday evening. Participants can also attend two breakout sessions on topics such as hummingbirds, butterflies and fruit trees.
Participants can attend Friday evening only, Saturday only, or both Friday and Saturday. The event also includes educational displays, vendors, authors and book signings, a raffle and door prizes.
Photography contest exhibit both days; details on www.gardenvisions.org. Winning photo contest entries will be on display during the conference and at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau from March 15 to May 11.
