One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters: January is National Mentoring Month. Now is an excellent time to consider becoming a mentor. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you are able to put a little magic in to a child's life with something as simple as washing a car or flying a kite together. In fact, almost anything you enjoy doing, some child would enjoy, also. The consistency of your friendship will be building blocks for a lifelong friendship. Applicant needs a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. An application will need to be completed and a background check will be done on all applicants to ensure the safety of the children in the program. We check three references (provided by applicant), insurance, police and sheriff records, and the sexual offender registry. We will also perform an interview and home visit.

Familywize Prescription Drug Discount Card "5 And 5" Campaign: FamilyWize cards help people who have no prescription drug insurance save up to 30 percent on their prescriptions. Please take five minutes to help five people. Give cards away to anyone you feel could use it. United Way of Inner Wisconsin will provide the cards.

Food Pantry Donations: Donate canned food, dry goods, personal care items and monetary donations to any of the local food pantries: Adams County Food Pantry, Christian Life Fellowship Food Pantry, South Wood Emergency Pantry and the Family Center Food Pantry.

Riverview Medical Center: Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver nutritious meals to area residents throughout the year.

South Wood County Humane Society: Donate broken/unused Christmas lights and aluminum cans. These items are recycled and the proceeds benefit the Humane Society.

South Wood County Special Olympics: Volunteer track coach needed. Volunteer will replace existing coach to teach basic skills. Athletes do running and walking events. They compete at an area meet and the state summer games. This is a well established team that has operated for the last eight years. Practice is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for 1.5 hours from February to June. Volunteer needs to be capable of teaching skills, and mature enough to understand special needs of athletes. There are programs available to teach coaches and become certified.

Vesper Community Academy: Volunteers are needed during the school year to assist with the after school program or during early dismissal days. Volunteers are needed to hold a demonstration or small class session on a talent/interest such a scrapbooking, etc.
