Taylor Schmidt tried to hold a smile as she knelt on the infield sand last June.

Four months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, Schmidt wasn't going to let her discomfort ruin any of the pictures parents were taking of the Algoma softball team following its state-qualifying victory at Horicon.

"I was in pain, so it killed me to kneel," she said. "One of the things that was in the back of my head was that it hurt even more not to be out there because my competitiveness just kills at me when I'm not playing." ...
