Morning roundup: Kicking the bad habits

Jan. 10, 2013

Through the thick and thin, the Green Bay Packers stood by Mason Crosby.

Now, the sixth-year kicker plans to pay back the favor.

As we wrote in our Thursday main story, Crosby has made his five last attempts entering Saturday’s NFC Divisional playoff game in San Francisco since his field goal conversion rate plummeted to 58.6 percent in a 21-13 win over Chicago on Dec. 16.

Crosby still finished the season at a league-low 63.6-percent efficiency, but made both of his attempts from 26 and 48 yards in a 55-7 thrashing of the Tennessee Titans last month before nailing two more crucial kicks against Minnesota the following week.

Just like that, Crosby was rolling again.

“It’s not like some magic ball,” said Crosby of the three-game turnaround. “I’ve been putting in the work every week and just had a couple that get away from you. It’s disappointing. I hate missing more than anything, so for me it’s fine-tuning every little detail I can put into it and ultimately go out and having some fun.”

*The Packers are not used to being underdogs this season, but it’s a role they’re perfectly comfortable with facing a 49ers’ team that beat them 30-22 in the regular-season opener on Sept. 9, writes Press-Gazette sports editor Mike Vandermause (http://tinyurl.com/bzv5paf).

*The Packers’ Insiders will be hosting a live show at PackersNews.com at 9:30 a.m. Thursday with a replay to follow (http://tinyurl.com/bfhqsc6) before Vandermause’s chat later at 4 p.m. (http://tinyurl.com/aqohdoy).
