Everybody's favorite ogre steps out of the swamp in a land far, far away and onto the stage of the Weidner Center for this weekend's performance of "Shrek The Musical.'' How's that for a fairy tale come to life? Based on the Oscar-winning 2001 DreamWorks movie, the touring production brings to life those same animated characters who have endeared themselves to families through countless DVD viewings, including the motormouth Donkey, Gingerbread Man, nasty Lord Farquaad (who walks on his knees to great comic effect for the entire show) and Fiona, the feisty princess in need of rescuing from a castle guarded by a dragon (a four-person puppet in the stage version). The wise-cracking family show features 19 new songs, big dance numbers - tap-dancing rats, anyone? - and big, colorful scenery that takes the audience along on Shrek's fun-filled journey to find love and become a hero.
