Pulaski district to pitch school referendum in separate questions

PULASKI - In April, Pulaski School District voters will get what many say they want: a ballot that includes multiple referendum questions about whether to borrow to pay for building repairs, technology and other amenities.

The School Board on Wednesday approved a spring referendum that includes four questions: one asking for about $4.4 million for building repairs and improvements; a second requesting to raise the tax levy by $650,000 in each of the next seven years to pay for technology; a third asking for about $9.13 million for building remodels and some classroom additions; and a fourth requesting $8.19 million for a new high school swimming pool.

Voters overwhelmingly rejected a Nov. 6 referendum that asked for about $33 million to pay for a variety of building repairs, a new high school swimming pool, an athletics complex and other amenities. School officials at the time said they had no alternative plan if the referendum failed.

Many district residents attending various school board meetings argued the first referendum failed because items were not divided into separate questions, and that the board included wants with needs.

The scaled back model includes funding for repairs to some roofs, parking lots, and heating and cooling systems, as well as increased building security.

The November referendum failed with a vote of about 6,600 against to 3,900 in favor.

The board will take a vote on final resolutions for the spring referendum on Monday, which is expected to be a formality.
