Officials urge new jail as prison population rises

The average jail population in Oconto County topped 70 in 2012, according to data presented at the Law Enforcement/Judiciary Committee last week.

That's nearly 10 more than the previous year, and more than double in 1999, when county officials began researching the need for a new jail.

"The monthly number has been increasing," Administrative Coordinator Kevin Hamann told the committee. "The last four months have been some of the highest ever." ...
