The following are some of the reactions to Gov. Scott Walker's State of the State address on Tuesday.
In his annual address, the governor called for a middle-class tax cut, renewed his focus on job creation, called for the passage of a mining bill and supported increasing education options.
Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay
"The governor gave a good speech tonight. But it did little to hide the fact that he is failing miserably on the most important issue we are facing: job creation. Under Governor Walker's watch our state has fallen to 42nd in the nation for job creation. Only eight states are doing worse than Wisconsin and all of our neighbors are doing better.
"If he is sincere about working together and including all Wisconsin citizens in the dialogue instead of his continuing pattern of holding listening sessions by invitation only, then perhaps he will have the opportunity to make good on his pledge.
"But if his rhetoric is merely cover for continuing an agenda that favors the wealthy and corporations at the expense of our public education system, health care and community services then our state will continue to falter and our families will pay the price for it."
Sen. Frank Lasee, R-Ledgeview
"Governor Walker spoke about streamlining mining regulations in Wisconsin. Changing the mining permit process will enable environmentally safe mining to move forward, creating 3,000 mining jobs, many of them union. Governor Walker also highlighted the need for middle class tax cuts and streamlining rules and regulations, all common sense reforms keeping Wisconsin moving forward.
"Working together with my colleagues in the Legislature and the Governor's office, I will continue to fight for what is important to Wisconsin - doing the most good for the most people with the money that we already have."
Rep. Jim Steineke, R-Vandenbroek
"The Legislature is ready to move forward with a strong agenda that will improve our state. We will encourage entrepreneurs to build their small business right here in Wisconsin. We will develop our workforce and connect employers with skilled workers. We will enhance our schools so more children are provided with the best education possible. We'll pass another balanced budget without raising taxes. We will thoroughly review all of the outdated regulations that are hampering business growth and people's everyday lives, and most importantly, we will advocate for the taxpayer every step of the way.
"The outlook for Wisconsin is bright. We have a Legislature and a Governor in office that will keep reforming state government."
Rep. John Klenke, R-Green Bay
"I'm especially excited about the governor's plan to reduce the burden by lowering middle-class income taxes and putting money back into the hands of hard-working families across the state. ...
"By focusing on our priorities to create jobs, develop the workforce, transform education, reform government, and invest in our infrastructure we can improve our economy and everyone's way of life.
"Governor Walker's State of the State gives us all a clear path for logical reforms and job creation. I remain committed to building on the strong foundation of fiscal responsibility set last session. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find solutions to the problems facing our state."
