Comparing 2012 and 2011 Packers defenses

Jan. 18, 2013

The Packers defense improved in just about every major statistical category this season compared to last year, which in some corners should justify keeping Dom Capers as defensive coordinator.

But the other side of the argument is that Capers’ unit came up woefully short in the playoff loss to San Francisco, and that based on how bad the defense was in 2011, how could it not improve this year?

The Packers defense, with several rookie contributors, allowed fewer yards and produced more sacks this season. On the other hand, the Packers had just 18 interceptions compared to 31 last year.

Here’s a look at how the 2011 and 2012 Packers defenses stacked up :

.................................................2012....2011
Points allowed per game...21.0...22.4
First downs allowed...308...358
Third down percentage...38.1%...42.6%
Yards per game allowed...336.8...411.6
Average yards per play...5.2...6.3
Rushing yards per game...118.5...111.8
Average per rush...4.5...4.7
Passing yards per game...218.3...299.8
Sacks......47...29
Interceptions...18...31
Fumble recoveries...5...7
Passer rating...76.8...80.6
