Green thumbs: Is your amaryllis in bloom?

7:24 PM, Jan. 18, 2013  |  Comments
Ellie Thomas of Allouez has been growing amaryllis for years, but she's never had a beauty this big. How big, you ask? The plant is 32 inches tall and the four blossoms on each of the two stems (with a bud still to open on a third) about 8 inches across. Maybe it's just coincidence, but she notes this is the first year she purchased a bare bulb and planted it herself.
