The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department and Oshkosh Fire Department worked in conjunction Sunday to rescue a stranded ice fisherman on Lake Winnebago.

According to the Sheriff's Department, reports came in Sunday morning from other ice fishermen about the stranded individual about a quarter-mile off shore near the 24th Street boat landing.

The report said that Ronald R. Derr, 47, of Oshkosh, had walked to his shanty the previous evening, but became stranded when high winds Saturday night opened a crack in the ice.

The Oshkosh Fire Department's airboat was summoned to span the 200 feet of open water and Derr was returned to shore with no injuries.
