After a month in quarantine after his arrival from South Dakota, the new red wolf at the NEW Zoo is on display to the public.

Tamaska, a 6-year-old male, joined Laurel, the zoo's female red wolf, in an exhibit this week. Zoo officials said they hope the pair will produce a litter of pups in the spring.

Red wolves have been an endangered species since 1973. The NEW Zoo and other American zoos are working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help restore the species through captive breeding and reintroduction of the animals to the wild. About 100 red wolves remain in the nation.

Tamaska previously lived at the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History in Sioux Falls, S.D.

During winter, the NEW Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission fees in January and February are $3 for adults, and $2 for seniors and children 3 through 15. Children younger than 3 are admitted free.
