The De Pere School District will launch a 4-year-old kindergarten program in fall.

The program will be half-day for four days a week. Some sections will be held in district elementary schools, and others will be located in day care centers within the district. Day care locations will provide wraparound child care for families that need it.

De Pere is the last district in Brown County to adopt 4-year-old kindergarten. The School Board approved the program on Monday.

The program will help prepare students to meet Common Core State Standards, officials say.

Wisconsin is among 45 states that have adopted the Common Core standards, which provide specific grade-level benchmarks that students are expected to achieve.

Minnesota also has adopted the math portion. Wisconsin schools have until 2014-15 to implement the new standards, which originally were adopted in 2010.
