FdL warming shelter expands hours in wake of subzero weather

With temperatures plunging below zero, local residents like nothing better than seeking out the comforts of a warm home.

While sub-zero weather may prove to be a temporary annoyance to many, the bitter cold can be deadly for the homeless. To keep the city's most vulnerable people safe, the Solutions Center decided this week to keep its warming shelter open throughout the day, Executive Director Lindee Kimball said.

The shelter opened in 2009 and is normally open from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. seven days a week from Nov. 1 through April 1. ...
