Help, don't ostracize, the homeless

Every winter I hold my breath anticipating the negative criticism toward St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter. Since opening, this has become the norm in Green Bay.

I feel embarrassed to live in a city that condemns and ostracizes the homeless. I am not attracted to cities with upscale restaurants and high-rises. They are a dime a dozen. What would attract me to relocate is to find a city that has a compassionate view of the homeless and works to help them. If I find a mayor or city council member volunteering at a homeless shelter, I want to live in that city.

People who condemn the homeless do not realize these are human beings who have hit a rough patch in life and do not have families to help them. We the communities are their families.

I would suggest the people who condemn the homeless volunteer at the shelter. This would enable them to get to know them as people and change their view.

I find it appalling that a city would take a church to court for helping homeless people. Will they take Santa Claus to court next year?
