Stop blaming teachers for nation's problems

By only listing teacher salaries above $50,000, this article paints a skewed picture of our teachers. Teachers making more than $50,000 have earned that salary through years of experience, ongoing professional development, with credits costing about $500 apiece, and master's degrees paid for out of their own pockets.

This article failed to recognize the many teachers making less than $50,000. Currently the average beginning teacher's salary in the Green Bay, Ashwaubenon, De Pere area is about $34,500, the type of information that was conveniently omitted. Although the article states more information is accessible online, this article exploited information, thus supporting the ongoing campaign of negativity towards educators.

Taxpayers demand high-quality teachers, but seem unwilling to provide high-quality compensation. Teachers do more than lecture; they provide educational opportunities to meet the individual and specialized learning needs of our diverse population of children, a task further complicated by decreased funding and increased class sizes. Teachers need an adequate living wage that allows them to raise families while continuing to pay back student loans.

How many blows must the teaching profession take before we say stop?

Stop targeting teachers and public workers for this nation's problems.
