De Pere's 1983 state-title team to be honored
De Pere High School will commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the school's first girls basketball state championship Friday night, Jan. 25.
Players and coaches from De Pere's 1982-83 team will be in attendance and introduced at halftime of the Redbirds' varsity girls basketball game against visiting Sheboygan North. The game is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
De Pere won the WIAA Class A state title in 1983.
Soccer tournament at Southwest Park in '15
The Appleton Soccer Club and De Pere Select Soccer Club are partnering to host the US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in summer 2015.
The tournament is expected to draw 14,000 visitors and pour millions of dollars into the economy in Northeastern Wisconsin. It will mark the third time the tournament has been held in the Appleton area.
More than 200boys and girls teams from 13 Midwest states will compete in the tournament, which is scheduled for June 19-24, 2015.
The tournament will be held at the 15-field USA Youth Sports Complex in Appleton and the seven soccer fields at Southwest Park in De Pere. Opening ceremonies will be held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
Appleton and De Pere previously hosted the tournament in 2011, and the competition was held in Appleton and Neenah in 2006.
The US Youth Soccer Region II Championships committee picked the Fox Cities area for the 2015 games over other Midwest sites in Indiana and South Dakota.

Anthem auditions for national curling tournament
Auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, for individuals interested in performing the national anthem during the 2013 USA Curling National Championships, which will be Feb. 9-16 at Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon.
The auditions will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, 1315 Lime Kiln Road, Green Bay.
Participants can show up any time and perform on a first-come, first-served basis.

The curling tournament will feature the top 10 men's and top 10 women's teams in the country who will vie to represent the United States at the World Curling Championships later this year.
Free-throw contest at Hemlock Creek
De Pere Knights of Columbus Abbot Pennings Council 3955 will hold its annual Free Throw Challenge starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Hemlock Creek Elementary School, 1900 Williams Grant Drive, Lawrence.
Boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are eligible to participate in the free event.
Each competitor will have 15 shots. A made free throw is worth one point.
The top three individuals in each age group will be eligible to compete at the district level.
Winter Warrior road race Saturday
Desert Veterans of Wisconsin Inc. will host the second annual Winter Warrior 5K race at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Mid Vallee Golf Course, 3850 Mid Valley Drive, Lawrence.
Registration is being taken on the Internet only through www.active.com and will close 24 hours before the event. All participants will receive a commemorative watch cap and a completion medal.
A limited selection of food and beverages will be available for purchase on site.
Potential snow and ice on the course won't be removed. Snowshoes are optional for the event.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Desert Veterans of Wisconsin Inc. in support of its veteran-focused charitable efforts.
