Wood County OWI numbers fall 36 percent from 2007 to 2011

Local authorities attribute a decline in drunken driving convictions to effective enforcement and prevention campaigns.

Statewide, the number of drunken driving convictions dropped from 40,260 in 2007 to 28,213 in 2011, a decrease of 30 percent, according to numbers provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Safety.

Wood County had an even sharper decline: OWI convictions fell from 733 to 468 during the same five-year time period, a decrease of 36 percent, according to the DOT. ...
