One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters: January is National Mentoring Month. Now is an excellent time to consider becoming a mentor. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you are able to put a little magic in to a child's life with something as simple as washing a car or flying a kite together. In fact, almost anything you enjoy doing, some child would enjoy, also. The consistency of your friendship will be building blocks for a lifelong friendship. Applicant needs a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. An application will need to be completed and a background check will be done on all applicants to ensure the safety of the children in the program. We check three references (provided by applicant), insurance, police and sheriff records and the sexual offender registry. We will also perform an interview and home visit.

South Wood County Special Olympics: Volunteer track coach is needed. Volunteer will replace existing coach to teach basic skills. Athletes do running and walking events. They compete at a local meet and the state summer games. This is a well established team that has operated for the last eight years. Practice is 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays for 1.5 hours from February to June. Volunteer needs to be capable of teaching skills, and mature enough to understand special needs of athletes. There are programs available to teach coaches and become certified.

The Family Center: The Family Center is in need of several volunteers. Shelter assistants are needed to work with the families who are in residence by helping with any of their immediate physical needs. Responsibilities include listening when clients want to talk, answering phones, responding to crisis calls, logging any information that will help the next person on duty, helping to maintain order and taking in fresh food donations. An environmental services volunteer is needed to clean weekly. Must be 18 or older, able to work alone with little direction and be able to work with cleaning chemicals. Hours can be flexible. Office assistants also are needed.

Mcmillan Memorial Library: The Youth Services Department is in need of volunteers for a Star Wars Party. Volunteers will be needed from noon to 4:30 p.m. Friday . Volunteers will help children with crafts, games and refreshments. Volunteers should be at least 12 years old.

Personal Essentials Pantry: Volunteers are needed to assist people with choosing from a list of essentials and to fill a bag with the request. The volunteers would need to be able to walk some distance.

Vesper Community Academy: Volunteers are needed during the school year to assist with the after school program or during early dismissal days. Volunteers are needed to hold a demonstration or small class session on a talent/interest such a scrapbooking, etc.
