Film aficionados in Los Angeles and New York probably caught many of this year's Oscar contenders before Northeastern Wisconsin even knew what all the fuss was about.

Bradley Cooper was swapping insults with Jennifer Lawrence in "Silver Linings Playbook'' pre-Thanksgiving turkey, the heartbreaking devastation of the tsunami in "The Impossible'' hit before Christmas weekend, and "Beasts of the Southern Wild'' was already delighting audiences last June - if you lived in a major U.S. city.
