Woman, 4 dogs flee Shawano Co. house fire

MATTOON - A woman and her four dogs escaped a house fire on Thursday night in northwestern Shawano County.

The fire was reported about 8 p.m. at W16076 Cherry Road, and the home was engulfed in flames when officers arrived, according to the Shawano County Sheriff's Department.

Mattoon, Birnamwood, Bowler and Norwood firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. Mattoon paramedics also were at the scene.

The home was destroyed. Thecause of the fire is under investigation.

The homeowner was treated for a minor injury and was released at the scene. She is staying with family in the Antigo area.

The property is owned by Stephanie and Claude Weinkoetz and is valued at $150,400, according to Shawano County land records.

The property is about 35 miles northwest of Shawano, between Mattoon and Aniwa.
