It's funny, and a little pathetic, I suppose, what we cling to this time of year in the name of gardening.

Had I written this column a week sooner, I would've been able to include my Christmas tree on the list of living greenery that helps gets those of us who live for the outdoor growing season through the far less rewarding indoor one. But after an admirable, well-hydrated, eight-week tour of duty (and fears the neighbors would start talking), I finally put it out to pasture in the backyard, where the sparrows have already moved in.
