Bill Bernardi of Highwood, Ill., had but a few words to describe his most recent camping trip to Point Beach State Forest in Two Rivers.

"Solitude, serenity, peace and quiet," he said. "We were the only people in the whole park."

And he almost missed the opportunity. With a shortened vacation time, Bernardi didn't have the chance to "head south" like he might have. Rather, closer destinations beckoned. ...
