Letter: Bush left negative legacy for country

6:29 PM, Jan. 26, 2013  |  Comments

Friends, citizens, I come not to praise George W. Bush but to bury him.

He inherited a Federal government surplus and turned it into a deficit, awarding a bundle of tax cuts regardless of his expenditures. He launched two wars, Afghanistan and Iraq, without providing for funding these red ink endeavors. He created a drug component to Medicare, again without finding the money to pay for it.

His hear-no-evil, see-no-evil, smell-no-evil team of "regulators" ignored signs of Ponzi schemes and toxic banking practices.

His condoning of military tribunals, secret overseas prisons, snooping on Americans and others, waterboarding and barbaric practices didn't make us any safer but had us forfeit the moral high ground after September 11.

I give him credit for proposing a solution to the decades long problem of illegal aliens. However, unlike Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush who also talked balanced budgets but were willing, despite rhetoric to the contrary, to combine tax increases with spending cuts, George W. Bush slept through eight years of economic bubble and eventual catastrophe. Of course, some of the blame has to be shared by voters who didn't consider the peril of electing a mediocrity to the Presidency, by Congress members who let parochial concerns and partisanship trump the public interest, and by the five members of the Supreme Court who played politics to allow this to pass.
