Cold water training keeps departments at the ready

More than 12 vehicles, including rescue units, lined up Saturday afternoon on the road outside the home of Stan and Ellen Czlapinski, just a few miles outside of Pittsville. Men and women dressed in red and yellow ice rescue suits stood around the pond on the couple's property, and inflated water rescue boats were visible.

This was not the scene of a disastrous situation - it was hands-on training for 40 members of law enforcement and rescue personnel. The participants ranged in age from 18 to 60, Pittsville Fire Chief Gerald Minor said.
