In 2009, when the Patriot Center announced plans to fill an entire wing of Rothschild's Cedar Creek Mall, the sense among many - including the Daily Herald Media Editorial Board - was that it was something close to the mall's last chance.

The mall had lost national clothing retailer Steve & Barry's when the chain went bankrupt, and amid the worst of the Great Recession in 2009, the new venture seemed both important and high-stakes.

We welcomed the center to town, as we wrote then, and hoped it would succeed. Still, there were a lot of questions: Was the 60,000-square-foot center too big for the area? Was it too far from downtown Wausau? Would it be able to compete with Stevens Point's SentryWorld? Would people want to stay there if there were no enclosed connection with a hotel? Would its success help other local businesses?

Here, as of January 2013, are the answers: No, no, yes, they built one and a resounding yes.

Today, the Patriot Center has been an impressive success story - and with its success has brought millions of dollars into the region.

The center is a home to local events such as nonprofit fundraisers, political events and the annual Hmong New Year celebration. It's the site of multiple sports and outdoor shows such as the Central Wisconsin Sports Show (Feb. 15 through Feb. 17) and the Wisconsin Deer Classic & Hunting Expo (Feb. 22 through Feb. 24.)

It is commonplace to see the parking lot at Cedar Creek full, and that has helped the mall businesses to fill up, too.

The economic impact extends well beyond the mall. Convention business was a key hole in Wausau's economy in 2009, a missing piece that prevented the region from capitalizing on tourism business. The rise of the Patriot Center has filled that niche, and has helped businesses throughout the metro area.
