Q: What treatment options are available for cartilage loss of the knee?

A: The knee contains two types of cartilage. The cartilage covering the ends of the bone is referred to as articular cartilage. There are also two c-shaped cushions between the bones of the knee called meniscus cartilages. Both types of cartilage can be damaged or torn. Unfortunately, the body typically does not have the ability to repair or regrow the cartilage.

Small tears of the meniscus or limited, superficial loss of the articular cartilage typically respond well to nonsurgical treatment or arthroscopic removal ...
