Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke's public call-to-arms has generated both applause and censure from citizens, politicians and law enforcement colleagues across the state.

Clarke created a media firestorm after he appeared on national media outlets CNN and Fox News encouraging citizens to learn to use a firearm to defend themselves, adding that people faced with immediate danger would have little time for, or the option of, dialing 911 for help.

Among his critics is Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls. ...
