Wisconsin strawberry production down in 2012

Strawberry production in Wisconsin dipped almost 23 percent last year.

Growers produced 31,000 hundredweight of strawberries last year, down from 40,000 hundredweight in 2011, according to an annual report from the Wisconsin field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Strawberry production has shown a steady decline in the state since 2008 when it it was 49,000 hundredweight.

Average yield per acre in Wisconsin was 51 hundredweight, a retreat from 57 hundredweight per acre in 2011. The national average was 537 hundredweight per acre.

The average price per pound in the state was $1.51, a decline of 10 cents from 2011, according to the report.
