More than 8 inches of snow fell Wednesday in a winter storm that caused several Stevens Point-area schools to dismiss students early and had Portage County declare a ban on car towing because of hazardous conditions.

There were 36 reported crashes in Portage County between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday. The ban on car towing took effect at 2 p.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. Steven Point banned parking on city streets between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. this morning so crews could clear roads.
